Transport Planning

Information for bus and coach transport planners

Our cities and towns have changed. New residential developments, business districts, and commercial centres have been built or will be built in the upcoming years. The reasons why we travel, how we travel and where we go are changing too. Our regional and district centres now need new links and all modes of public transport need to be integrated.

The NSW Government's bus reform for metropolitan Sydney will ensure both private and government bus operators develop routes, timetables and passenger services that meet these demands. Put simply, bus reform will mean that bus services reflect the needs of our communities.

There are six areas of bus reform, which will help to create one, seamless greater metropolitan bus service.

Bus travel across metropolitan Sydney will be fairer, easier, and faster. Please click on the links below to read more about each area of reform:

  1. New bus regions (PDF) - better, fewer bus operator contracts
  2. Bus priority (PDF) - better travel times for buses
  3. Integrated network planning (PDF) - more direct services and better train connections
  4. Fairer fares (PDF) - standard ticket prices across Sydney
  5. Integrated ticketing - one ticket for all buses, regardless of the operator
  6. Bus fleet and infrastructure upgrade (PDF) - new low floor, air-conditioned buses

Metropolitan bus region profiles

NSW Transport and Infrastructure uses the best available information to plan bus services across contract areas.

To assist in the planning process, a contract region profile has been prepared for each of the 15 Sydney metropolitan contract regions.

The profiles outline information unique to each region so that NSW Transport and Infrastructure is better able to design bus networks that are reflective of each community's needs.
