Authorised taxi-cab inspection stations

Taxis are required to have regular inspections at an Authorised Taxi Inspection Station (ATIS), to help ensure the safety and quality of taxis used by the public.

Clause 119 of the Passenger Transport Regulation 2007 requires taxis to have 'Taxi Comfort' vehicle inspections by an ATIS every:

• 4 months if the area of operation is a Transport District,
• 12 months if the area of operation is in the Western Division
• 6 months if the area of operation is outside a Transport District or the Western Division.

Role of ATIS examiners

The Director General of Transport for NSW appoints ATIS examiners for a five-year term. ATIS examiners undergo specialised training before they are appointed and their performance as an examiner is monitored.

Examiners carry out several taxi inspection standard checks including:

• Vehicle age, livery, and decals
• Air conditioner operation
• Taxi meter operation
• Interior and exterior condition
• Operation of safety equipment specific to taxis.

Applying to become an ATIS examiner

Only mechanics who have been approved by Roads and Maritime Services for the purpose of conducting inspections and tests of registrable light vehicles, pursuant to the regulation under the Road Transport (Vehicle Registration) Act 1997, will be considered as an ATIS examiner.

The applicant must:

• Be an RMS(formerly RTA) open light vehicle AIS examiner, and
• Be an active RMS(formerly RTA) authorised LPG examiner.

Assessment criteria for ATIS examiners

The following requirements must be met in making application to become an ATIS examiner:

1. The applicant must:
   1. Work at an existing ATIS garage or
   2. Be responding to an EoI issued by Transport for NSW for an additional ATIS garage
2. The applicant must be authorised by Roads and Maritime Services for the purpose of conducting inspections and tests of registrable light vehicles, pursuant to the Road Transport (Vehicle Registration) Act 1997, and provide evidence of this qualification to Transport for NSW in making application
3. The applicant must be a Roads and Maritime Services authorised LPG inspector and provide proof of this qualification to Transport for NSW in making application
4. The applicant should preferably be an active AUVIS inspector, and preference will be given to applicants holding such a qualification in cases where more than one application is received
5. The applicant must have a satisfactory Roads and Maritime Services AIS history as determined by Transport for NSW. Details of experience (including years) in the motor trade must also be listed
6. Two references must be provided by either a taxi network, taxi operator or other relevant stakeholders in the taxi industry. Transport for NSW may contact the referees
7. The applicant must provide details of the workshop's size, parking facilities, facilities for customers and any specialised equipment on site, which may be relevant to the application, eg number of vehicle bays in the workshop.
8. Additional taxi related services offered by the applicant (eg air-conditioning servicing, auto electrical repairs and details of any other specialist skills) should also be included to help support an application to become an ATIS examiner.

The ATIS applicant must agree to undergo relevant background checks and to sign and abide by Transport for NSW's code of conduct for ATIS examiners.
