Sydney Metropolitan Bus Network Reviews and Public Consultation

The Government's bus reform program aims to develop bus services that better reflect community needs with new service contracts introducing consistent service standards, clear performance requirements and sustainable funding. The reviews improve bus service performance by providing fast, frequent and direct services to regional centres as well as other important destinations such as hospitals, railway stations, education and community facilities.

Metropolitan Sydney Bus Contract Regions and Strategic Bus Corridors

To achieve these goals, a simplification of the previous bus contract system was necessary. This involved the consolidation of 87 individual bus contracts in the Sydney metropolitan area into 15 new contract regions, which focus on providing services to major centres, links to other modes of transport, and providing local people with connections to local places and services.

The 15 contract regions will each have an integrated bus network introduced to ensure that services best meet the needs of the travelling public.

An integrated bus network is designed to ensure there is a network in each region that offers multiple travel opportunities to individuals. It ensures all residents have direct and frequent service to regional centres. A key component of the 15 bus contract regions are the strategic bus corridors which provide direct links between key centres and patronage generators. The progressive rollout of bus priority measures on these corridors will improve reliability and travel times.

The new contracts are designed to ensure stakeholder and community consultation during the design of the integrated network. Each region is also required to undertake an annual service review which includes input from stakeholder meetings to enable the networks in each region to be adjusted to meet changing demands.

Stakeholder and community consultation ensures that bus operators, NSW Transport and Infrastructure and the community work together to review and improve public transport in their region, by making timetable amendments and route changes.

To date, integrated network plans have been introduced in five regions, with the remaining networks to be introduced in 2009.

Current integrated network reviews across metropolitan Sydney include:
