Disaster and emergency assistance

Transport for NSW supports customers who have been affected by a natural disaster or emergency in NSW. 

A disaster or emergency includes:

  • A declared Natural Disaster or
  • A declared State of Emergency or
  • An event related to a natural disaster or emergency where the NSW Minister for Roads and Ports declares that certain fees and requirements can be waived

If you are unsure if a situation has been declared a natural disaster or state of emergency you can visit The Ministry for Police and Emergency Services (MPES) website for a list of declared natural disaster areas and a record of State of Emergency declarations. 

If the Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight declares that assistance will be available (to eligible customers) due to a natural disaster or emergency, information about this assistance will be published on the Natural Disaster and Emergency Customer Assistance page on the Roads and Maritime Services website.

If you have been affected by a natural disaster or emergency in NSW you may be eligible for free replacement products, assistance with accessing certain services, or refunded fees. Eligibility requirements are outlined on the Natural Disaster and Emergency Customer Assistance page of the Roads and Maritime Services website.

What help is available

  • Information can be found on the Natural Disaster and Emergency Customer assistance page regarding the following products and services:

    • Licence products (both Vehicle and Maritime licences)
    • Registration products (Certificate of Registration for a vehicle and/or vessel; Number Plates)
    • Mobility Parking Scheme Permits
    • NSW Photo Cards
    • Roads and Maritime E-toll tags
    • Waiving of fees and refunds, including certain inspection fees
    • Simplified replacement procedures and POI requirements

    To obtain assistance, you can visit your nearest Service NSW or Roads and Maritime Services customer service centre. You can also call Roads and Maritime on 132 213, or Service NSW on 13 77 88.

  • Replacement Opal cards are available by contacting 13 67 25 (13 OPAL) or access additional information on the Opal website

  • Roads and Maritime Services do not refund or waive stamp duty on vehicles written off due to a natural disaster or emergency. 

    If you need to purchase a replacement vehicle due to a natural disaster or emergency, Roads and Maritime Services collects the applicable stamp duty for that vehicle on behalf of the NSW Office of State Revenue. You can then submit an application for a refund to the Office of State Revenue (OSR). Visit the OSR website for more information.

  • The NSW State Debt Recovery Office (SDRO) can also assist eligible customers in affected areas who have outstanding fines. Fine related actions may be temporarily deferred or timeframes to make payments extended. Contact SDRO on 1300 655 805 or visit the SDRO website for more information.

  • There are other forms of assistance which may be available to you if you have been affected by a declared natural disaster or state of emergency. This help can include financial hardship assistance administered by other government agencies. Visit the MPES website for more information on the assistance available.
