Proof of eligibility

School students under 16 years of age do not have to carry proof of their eligibility for a concession on government rail and ferry services and all metropolitan Sydney and outer metropolitan bus services.

However, students who look older than they are may wish to carry the NSW Proof of Age Card. This card is free and can be issued by the applicant's school during term or by RailCorp's Passes and Concessions Office outside school terms or to young people who do not attend school. (See the section on Travel Concessions for Children and Young People for more information on the Proof of Age Card.)

On turning 16, young people will need to obtain a NSW School Student Identification Card to obtain a half fare concession.

On privately operated bus services in rural and regional areas and private ferry services across NSW, school students 15 years of age and older must carry the Student Omnibus Concession Fare Certificate (or other card recognised by the service provider) to prove their eligibility for a concession fare.

Note: Private bus services in rural and regional areas and private ferry services may have different proof of eligibility requirements. Check the Quick Reference Guides or contact the local operator for more information about proof of eligibility requirements on these services.
