Travel Concessions for Tertiary Students and Mature Aged Senior Secondary Students 19 Years and Older

Eligibility

  • Full time "mature aged" school students 19 years and older are entitled to a half fare concession for travel on government rail and ferry services and all metropolitan Sydney and outer metropolitan bus services. (Note: Some students will also be eligible for free travel from their home to a registered day school and back again under the School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS). Further information about eligibility criteria for the SSTS.
  • Full time tertiary students who attend day classes and are not in paid employment or otherwise receiving an income are now entitled to a half fare concession for travel on government rail and ferry services and all metropolitan Sydney and outer metropolitan bus services. (See Recent Changes in NSW Public Transport Concessions for more information about changes to concessions for tertiary students).
  • Tertiary students who are under 30 years of age are entitled to a half fare concession for travel to and from classes on privately operated bus services in rural and regional areas and privately operated ferry services across NSW.

For the purposes of obtaining a tertiary student's transport concession, full time courses are defined as courses that run for 9 weeks or longer and:

  • For Universities, have a course load designated as full time by the University, based on credit point value.
  • For TAFEs and private colleges, have face to face class time of 20 hours or more per week.

Note: Students must be Australian citizens or permanent residents to be eligible for a transport concession, living in NSW and/or attending a registered NSW tertiary institution. International students are not eligible for a concession except those on approved Australian Government exchange or sponsorship programs.

For the purposes of obtaining a concession, students receiving Commonwealth income support (like Austudy) or who are on approved scholarships, living allowances or bursaries are not considered to be "earning and income."

Proof of eligibility

There are two different types of concession cards that tertiary students and mature aged school students over 19 years of age may carry in order to obtain a half fare concession on transport services. The type of card required depends on the service provider and the area in which the service operates.

This means a change for those students who use private bus services in Sydney, Newcastle, the Illawarra, the Central Coast, the Lower Hunter and the Blue Mountains and who used to carry the Student Omnibus Concession Fare Certificate or other card issued or recognised by their local bus operator. (See the Recent Changes in NSW Public Transport Concessions for further information.)

Check the Quick Reference Guide for Buses for the type of card required on the different services.
