The future of vehicle registration in NSW

The Vehicle Registration Initiatives Discussion Paper, released by the NSW Government, proposes registration changes including:

  • Incentives to encourage the uptake of safer vehicles in line with the ANCAP safety ratings system.
  • Flexible payment options for continuous pay by the month registration to increase the flexibility and affordability of registration.
  • Other incentives to purchase safer motorcycles.
  • Broad improvements to the fairness of caravan and light trailer charges.

Changes to stamp duty and CTP insurance are also proposed to further encourage the uptake of safer and greener vehicles through pricing incentives.

The reforms are intended to provide the basis for a modern, flexible and sustainable registration system.

The NSW Government is committed to thorough consultation about the proposals, and encourages members of the public and stakeholders to provide feedback on the options described in the Discussion Paper.
