Sydney Light Rail Program

Light rail will play an important part in the future of transport in Sydney.

In December 2012, the NSW Government announced that it would extend light rail from Circular Quay to Kingsford and Randwick, through the heart of the Sydney CBD via George Street.

Sydney’s Light Rail Future (pdf 3.9MB) provides more details on the CBD and South East light rail project and how the route was developed.

The CBD and South East light rail extension was developed in close consultation with councils, business and local communities.  Services will be high frequency, efficient and reliable and will serve the Moore Park sporting and entertainment precinct, the University of NSW and Prince of Wales Hospital. Subject to planning approval, work is expected to commence on the new lines in 2014.

The extensions will be delivered in addition to the Inner West Light Rail Extension from Lilyfield to Dulwich Hill, which is currently under construction and on track for services to begin in 2014.

A dedicated light rail program team has been established in Transport for NSW to bring light rail work together into a single Sydney Light Rail Program.
