Public feedback needed for more taxis

The Director General of Transport for NSW Les Wielinga is asking for public feedback to help determine the number of new taxi licences issued in Sydney in the next financial year.

"By 31 March each year Transport for NSW is required to determine the number of new taxi licences to be released during the following financial year," Mr Wielinga said.

"We want to make sure we strike the right balance between having enough taxis on the road to cater for passenger demand, while ensuring it is an attractive industry to work in.

"I encourage the community, as well as individuals and organisations directly involved in the taxi industry, to read the information available and provide their feedback.

"A large number of new licences have, in the past, gone to experienced taxi drivers providing them with an opportunity for a career path in the taxi industry.

"In the submissions, we are seeking comments on such areas as changes in passenger demand for taxis, the performance of existing taxi services and the viability and sustainability of the taxi industry," Mr Wielinga said.

Licences for wheelchair-accessible taxis are not subject to the annual determination and continue to be available on application at $1,000 per annum in Sydney.

"Wheelchair-accessible taxis provide a valuable service for the community and I hope their numbers continue to grow," Mr Wielinga said.

Mr Wielinga said information was available to help those wishing to make submissions, including details on the number of current licences and the process for determining new licences.

The discussion paper can be found on the Transport for NSW website at Annual taxi licence release and submissions will be accepted up to 5pm on Tuesday 14 February 2012.
