High pedestrian activity area extended for greater safety in Forbes

A high pedestrian activity area in Forbes will be extended by more than 100 metres to improve safety for local motorists and pedestrians.
Transport for NSW conducted a speed zone review of Grenfell Street between Lawler Street and Renfree Street following a request from Forbes Shire Council, which was concerned about the safety of vulnerable road users in the area.
Transport for NSW Regional Director West Alistair Lunn said the review area ran past netball courts, a skate park and ninja park, and also a former supermarket car park used by many carers and parents as the closest parking option.
“It is an area frequented by many young and vulnerable road users and the review determined a lower speed limit would be appropriate to improve safety for all road users,” Mr Lunn said.
“As a result, the existing 40 km/h high pedestrian activity area on Grenfell Street will be extended by 108 metres from Lawler Street to Renfree Street.
“This change will add only a few seconds in travel time for motorists in the area, a very minor change that will not adversely impact trips through the town but will deliver a significant boost in terms of local pedestrian and road safety.”
Mr Lunn said the speed zone review assessed a number of factors including location, crash history, road environment, the number of access points, road usage, traffic mix and local traffic volumes.
The reduced speed limit will come into effect on Tuesday 19 March and new roadside signage will be installed to advise motorists of the change.
