Reduced speed limit for Riverina Highway at Thurgoona

Motorists will soon experience safer journeys on the Riverina Highway at Thurgoona with the speed limit set to be reduced next month.

A Transport for NSW spokesperson said the speed limit will drop from 100 km/h to 80 km/h for a 3.8-kilometre stretch along the highway from Tuesday 12 March.

“The review of this speed zone was initiated in response to a request from the community due to safety concerns,” the spokesperson said.

“The review found a recent crash, a sloped road environment and an increase in residential development. Reducing the speed zone in this area will improve safety for
road users and reduce the risk of crashes.

“Speeding is the biggest contributor to road trauma in NSW so it’s important that motorists are aware of the changed speed limit and follow the road rules.

“In NSW, speeding contributes to 40 per cent of road fatalities and 24 per cent of serious injuries from road crashes each year.

“Speeding increases both the risk of a crash happening, as well as the likelihood of death or serious injury.”

Electronic message boards will be onsite two weeks before and one week following the speed zone reduction, to notify motorists of the changed speed limit.
