Traffic diversions back as students return to Wollongong education precinct

A temporary traffic management plan will be implemented around the University of Wollongong to manage congestion as students and staff return to campus from Monday 26 February.

Transport for NSW Chief Customer Officer, Roger Weeks said morning traffic diversions will be in place weekdays from 7.45am to 9.15am, excluding public holidays, to help minimise congestion on the M1 Motorway for the start of the tertiary year.

“The Wollongong Education Precinct Traffic Management Plan will be in place for about six weeks following its considerable success at reducing congestion during the peak return to campus run in previous years,” Mr Weeks said.

“We would still encourage those attending University of Wollongong and TAFE NSW to leave their car at home and consider alternative transport options where possible."

University of Wollongong Chief Operating Officer and Vice-President (Operations), Adam Malouf said the University is looking forward to welcoming students back on campus as the session begins.

“As the University resumes its session, students may encounter delays on the M1 while travelling to the campus,” Mr Malouf said.

“The University collaborates closely with Transport for NSW and aims to provide regular traffic updates to ensure visitors can make an informed decision while travelling to the campus. These measures are temporary and ensure safety of visitors and community members.

“The University encourages students, staff, and community members to utilise alternative modes of transport such as carpooling, public transport, or the free shuttle bus to save time during peak hours.”

Mr Weeks said, while the plan is in place, all traffic exiting the M1 Motorway at University Ave, heading to the University, will be diverted left and required to make a U-turn at the eastern roundabout.

“Traffic control teams will then implement the western entry detour when needed to alleviate congestion on Irvine Street. In those instances, all traffic will be diverted to the University’s Western Access route via Murphys Avenue and Robsons Road,” Mr Weeks said.

“Motorists accessing the M1 northbound ramp at Northfields Ave, will also be diverted via Murphys Avenue and Robsons Road during peak periods. Those heading north can also join the M1 Motorway Northbound from Robsons Rd at West Wollongong.”
