Update on closure of Rozelle Parklands

Published

The Rozelle Parklands will remain closed to the public until further notice while more tests are carried out after traces of bonded asbestos were identified in two samples of garden mulch used in landscaping.

The contaminated material was identified in garden beds adjacent to the playground.

Transport for NSW and officers from the NSW Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) collected samples from across the park today, and these are currently undergoing laboratory analysis.

Transport for NSW and contractor John Holland CPB Joint Venture are also working closely with the EPA in investigating the source of the contaminated material.

Initial air monitoring undertaken at the site has not found evidence of air-borne particles outside of normal expected parameters.

While the park is closed to the public, temporary fencing is being erected to restrict public access, and this work is expected to be finished tomorrow.

The EPA is also completing a full risk assessment to determine what, if any, risk there may be to human health or the environment, and ensure all necessary safeguards are in place. NSW Health will support EPA in this.
