South West Rail Link powers ahead

crane1st Nov 2011

Work on the South West Rail Link continues to power ahead.

Recently almost $80 million worth of major tenders were awarded for works that will support the operation of the South West Rail Link.

This follows installation of the first new track for the project earlier this year and a $4.5 million weekend work-a-thon in September which saw 300 workers make dramatic progress on the upgrade of Glenfield Station and rail-bus interchange.

Combined with ongoing works at the Glenfield south and north junctions, which will connect the new rail line to the existing network, these milestones have seen the new rail line take shape over the past six months.

The $2.1 billion South West Rail Link involves construction of a new 11km twin-track passenger rail line connecting Glenfield to Leppington via Edmondson Park, with new stations and commuter parking at Edmondson Park and Leppington; and a major upgrade of Glenfield Station and rail-bus interchange.

Delivery of South West Rail Link also includes construction of a new Auburn stabling facility which will support the introduction of South West Rail Link services in 2016 by improving the network’s efficiency and allowing for an increased number of trains to service Sydney’s inner-west and south-west.

Commuters will progressively benefit from the works at Glenfield with the new Station and northern rail junction to be fully operational in 2014. Services will commence on the new line to Leppington in 2016.

When complete, the new rail line make it easier for south-west Sydney commuters to cycle, catch a bus, walk or drive to a station and access improved rail services to destinations like Liverpool, Parramatta or the Sydney CBD.
