Heavy Vehicle Access Policy

The NSW Heavy Vehicle Access Policy contributes to greater national harmonisation, with better safety, sustainability and efficiency outcomes for industry and the community as freight demand grows.

The Heavy Vehicle Access Policy outlines a strategic approach to heavy vehicle access in NSW for state, regional and local roads. The Heavy Vehicle Access Policy will support an efficient road freight network that is connected to our local communities and commercial hubs, and is integrated with railways, intermodal terminals, ports and airports.

Updates to the NSW Heavy Vehicle Access Policy

Forming part of the NSW Freight Policy Reform Program, the Heavy Vehicle Access Policy is being refreshed to ensure we remain responsive and agile to changing markets, emerging vehicle technologies and the increasing freight task.

Significant improvements in heavy vehicle access have been achieved, including unlocking key freight routes and greater access for higher productivity vehicles.

Heavy vehicle technology is evolving rapidly. There is a significant opportunity to accelerate the uptake of high productivity, low and zero emission vehicles to improve the way road freight is moved across NSW.

These modern vehicles will further improve safety and support better decision making about the use of the NSW road network.
