South West Rail Link Extension Corridor

The NSW Government is future proofing public transport options by protecting an additional public transport corridor in Western Sydney. The proposed public transport corridor will connect with the South West Rail Link and into the existing rail network.

Project profile

The NSW Government is taking action now to plan for Western Sydney’s future transport needs by preserving an additional public transport corridor in Sydney’s South West to help people to access jobs and services in the future.

The extension corridor is proposed to connect Leppington Station to Bringelly and then head in two directions: north to the T1 Western Line near St Marys; and south to Narellan. We are also considering whether to extend the corridor further south to the existing T2 South Line.

A number of core stations are proposed in the existing and planned centres of Rossmore, Bringelly, North Bringelly, Oran Park and Narellan. A station is also proposed at Badgerys Creek to serve the Western Sydney Airport. The corridor allows for additional stations if required.

The extension of the South West Rail Link is one of 19 major transport corridors across Sydney identified for preservation in the NSW Long Term Transport Master Plan, to meet future transport requirements.  The corridor will provide a north-south connection through the South West Growth Centre and the Broader Western Sydney Employment Area including the Western Sydney airport at Badgerys Creek.

Benefits

The transport corridor for the South West Rail Link extension would:

  • Ensure a dedicated corridor is available to deliver public transport infrastructure for Greater Western Sydney when it is needed
  • Create north-south transport connection, helping people to access jobs and services and contribute to the growth of liveable communities in the area
  • Provide access to the Western Sydney airport at Badgerys Creek in the longer term, as demand increases
  • Ensure new town centres are designed and planned around public transport
  • Provide greater certainty to stakeholders, local government, businesses, and the wider community
  • Reduce the cost of delivering transport infrastructure in the future.

Status

Following preliminary investigations, Transport for NSW identified potential options for the public transport corridor. In 2014, we asked the community about the location of stations and the study area for the transport corridor, to help us best plan for the future public transport needs of Western Sydney. The consultation was advertised and included four community information and feedback sessions.

Feedback from consultation in 2014, along with environmental, land use and engineering investigations, has helped to identify a recommended transport corridor for the southern section of the South West Rail Link extension. This section extends from Leppington to Bringelly and Bringelly to Narellan. Following consultation, we are also investigating a study area from Narellan to the existing T2 South Line.

Responding to community feedback, the northern section of the corridor between Bringelly and the T1 Western Line is being investigated together with planning for the Outer Sydney Orbital. Opportunities to accommodate road, freight and/or passenger rail modes in the same corridor, where practical, will be considered as part of the Outer Sydney Orbital investigations.

At the same time, we are working with the Australian Government to determine how the northern section of the corridor best serves the Western Sydney airport and the Broader Western Sydney Employment Area.

Western Sydney Airport – Badgerys Creek

The Australian Government has announced that Badgerys Creek will be the site of the future second Sydney airport. The proposed corridor for the South West Rail Link extension includes a station at Badgerys Creek.

The NSW Government is working with the Australian Government on a package of infrastructure to support and complement the development of the airport – both in the short term and longer term.

Consultation

Consultation for the South West Rail Link Extension public transport corridor preservation is now closed.

Transport for NSW undertook consultation between 6 June and 7 August 2015 inviting comments and feedback on the southern section of the South West Rail Link extension. This includes:

  • The recommended corridor from Leppington to Bringelly and from Bringelly to Narellan
  • Transport for NSW contacted and consulted with land owners whose properties are identified within the recommended corridor.

The community was invited to attend an information session and to speak with a member of the project team. Locations of where the community information sessions were held include:

  • Bringelly Community Centre
  • Catherine Field Community Centre
  • Camden Civic Centre
  • Narellan Library
