Mount Ousley Road shared path bridge

Reviewed

Project overview

Transport for NSW (Transport) is progressing design work for a pedestrian and cyclist shared path over Mount Ousley Road.

Transport has been carrying out design and planning work for a shared path connection, including a bridge over Mount Ousley Road.

The shared path will provide a new, accessible and safe active transport connection for people walking and cycling between the University of Wollongong and Wollongong TAFE precincts and suburbs to the north.

The concept design for the Mount Ousley Road shared path bridge has been finalised and the project will now move into the detailed design stage.

The shared path and bridge will be delivered as part of the Mount Ousley interchange project.

July 2025 – Project go ahead and community consultation summary report

The Mount Ousley Road shared path bridge has received the go ahead and will now move into the detailed design stage.

The shared path and bridge will now be delivered as part of the Mount Ousley interchange project.

During the community consultation period in April and early May 2025, Transport received 233 pieces of feedback. There was strong support for the improved access to key destinations that the bridge will provide for those walking and cycling.

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback.

A community consultation summary report (PDF, 11.8 MB) outlining what we heard is now available.

April 2025 – Preliminary concept design consultation closed

The Have Your Say consultation on the preliminary concept design for the shared path bridge has now closed. We’d like to thank the community for providing their feedback. Feedback received during the consultation period will be considered as we finalise the concept design. A summary of feedback received will be shared with the community.

Features

The key features of the preliminary concept design include:

  • a new accessible four-metre-wide shared path for cyclists and pedestrians that incorporates a bridge over Mount Ousley Road, adjacent to McMahon Street
  • connections from the southern side of Mount Ousley Road to other planned shared paths across the M1 Princes Motorway and towards Wollongong TAFE
  • a designated, accessible, raised pedestrian crossing at Dumfries Avenue, around 120 metres west of McMahon Street
  • a 130-metre-long shared path for cyclists and pedestrians along the southern side of Dumfries Avenue, connecting the new bridge to the new pedestrian crossing
  • traffic calming measures along Dumfries Avenue in the area of the bridge and shared path crossing, to provide for a safer road environment
  • stairs, with wheeling channel for cyclists to more easily move bikes up and down the stairs, helping to provide access to the north and east
  • landscaping and revegetation, along with urban design treatments
  • an accessible parking space in the cul-de-sac adjacent to the southern side of Mount Ousley Road
  • lighting of the shared path extending from Dumfries Avenue across to the other shared paths being delivered as part of the project.

Frequently asked questions

What have we been doing?

In recent months we have:

  • developed a preliminary design for the shared path bridge and ramps that improves active transport connections through the area, while maintaining critical access to Port Kembla for overheight vehicles
  • met with local community groups, residents and other stakeholders to share initial designs and gain local insight into issues that need to be considered in the design of the bridge and connections
  • refined the design in response to feedback, particularly to minimise impacts to vegetation, improve connectivity to surrounding streets and enhance safety features
  • commenced preliminary environmental impact assessment work
  • displayed the preliminary concept design in April and early May 2025, and sought feedback from local residents, active transport users, public transport users, and other stakeholders
  • following recent community consultation, the concept design for the new shared path bridge over Mount Ousley Road has been finalised.

What is proposed?

The key features of the concept design for the cyclist and pedestrian shared path connection and bridge include:

How will the community be involved in the development of the project?

In early 2025 we worked with Wollongong City Council, community groups and other stakeholders to develop a preliminary concept design. During April and early May 2025, the preliminary concept design was publicly displayed, and feedback was sought from local residents, active transport users, public transport users, and other stakeholders. Transport received 233 pieces of feedback during the consultation period. A consultation summary report has been prepared which outlines feedback received and how it has been considered in the development of the concept design. We will continue to keep the community informed as the project progresses.

What are some of the potential impacts for this project?

The construction of the shared path connection and bridge will result in some environmental impacts. Potential impacts include vegetation clearing, noise, vibration and dust from construction, impacts to parking and visual impacts including light spill.

These impacts will be further assessed over the coming months and will be minimised as much as possible through detailed design and mitigation measures that will be implemented during construction.

What's next for the project?

The shared path and bridge will now be delivered as part of the Mount Ousley interchange project.

A period of detailed design will now commence, with construction of the new shared path bridge expected to begin in 2026 and be completed in time for the opening of the new interchange.
