Trial Fare Evasion Detection System on the Bankstown Line

Reviewed

Project overview

Transport for NSW (Sydney Trains) is trialling the use of an Artificial Intelligence system to detect rates of fare evasion.

Transport for NSW (Sydney Trains) is trialling the use of an Artificial Intelligence system, combined with the Opal system, to detect rates of fare evasion at selected stations on the Bankstown Line. From January to June 2021, fare evasion cost Sydney Trains $14.6 million.

The trial will help Sydney Trains to:

  1. Identify times and locations of higher rates of fare evasion at the participating stations.
  2. Provide data that can inform the deployment of Transport Officers to conduct Fare Compliance Operations in a cost-effective manner.
  3. Gather data that can inform process for encouraging passenger use of Opal to pay for fares.

The trial will use existing CCTV cameras. There will be no personal or private information collected as a result of this trial, with people counting and Opal data being anonymised to help track rates of fare evasion, rather than individual offenders.
