Road-Rail and Small Plant Vehicle Register

Construction workers on the tracks Why does Transport Projects compile an Infrastructure Maintenance Owner and Vehicle Register?

The purpose of the Road-Rail and Small Plant Vehicle Register (xls 6.6MB) (May 2012) is to:

  • provide a complete list of the rolling stock currently registered to operate on Transport for NSW programs on:
    • Greenfield rail sites under contruction
    • Greenfield rail sites for commissioning
    • Brownfield rail sites under construction
    • Brownfield rail sites for commissioning
  • confirm the date at which vehicle registrations expire
  • confirm any restrictions imposed on the operation of certified rolling stock.

Who would use the Transport Projects Road-Rail and Small Plant Vehicle Register?

The rolling stock registration process is for contractors or third-party operators of road-rail and small plant rolling stock to ensure that their machinery is approved to use on Transport for NSW worksites.

Road-rail and small plant infrastructure maintenance rolling stock is not permitted to travel or operate on Transport for NSW managed and controlled rail sites without the authority of the Transport Projects Chief Engineer, or his nominated representative.

Operating approval includes formal written advice of vehicle acceptance and registration (demonstrated by the Certification sticker), the issue of an operating exemption notice or an operating waiver.

All road-rail and small plant infrastructure maintenance vehicles must have their ownership, technical details, certification and approval recorded on the Transport for NSW vehicle register, to indicate that the vehicle has met our acceptance requirements and is authorised to operate on Transport for NSW-managed rail infrastructure in accordance with Worksite Operating Conditions.

All rail bound infrastructure maintenance vehicles (i.e. rail grinders, ballast regulators) must meet RailCorp acceptance requirements and be recorded in the RailCorp Train Operating Conditions (TOC) Manual, in order to obtain authority to operate on Transport for NSW managed worksites.

The information in the Road-rail and small plant vehicle Register was compiled by Transport Projects Division from documents published by RailCorp and from inquiries made by Transport Projects.
