Taxi Drivers' Responsibilities

Authorised taxi drivers must comply with all relevant requirements of the Passenger Transport Regulation 2007. Some of these requirements are:

Taxi drivers must not:

  • Tout or solicit for passengers or for a hiring
  • Move more than 3 metres from the taxi without reasonable excuse, except when loading or unloading luggage or whilst in the Sydney Airport holding bay
  • Smoke in the taxi at any time
  • Eat or drink in the taxi when hired or available for hire
  • Move the taxi while any door is open
  • Display any advertisement or notice in or on a taxi without the approval of the Ministry of Transport

Taxi drivers must:

  • Ensure their taxi is clean and tidy
  • Be clean and tidy, and wear approved network uniforms and enclosed shoes
  • Behave with civility and propriety towards intending passengers, passengers, other taxi drivers and authorised officers
  • Accept any hiring immediately when offered if the taxi is available for hire, except in the Sydney Airport precinct where a hiring can only be accepted in a taxi zone
  • Allow assistance animals or animals in training in their taxi
  • Give lost property to its owner or your taxi network
  • Hand over driver licence and driver authority card to authorised officer when requested to do so
  • Tell an authorised officer about details of a hiring when requested to do so within the Airport precinct
