Taxi Safety Watch

What is Taxi Safety Watch

Taxi Safety Watch is a NSW Transport and Infrastructure initiative to monitor criminal incidents reported to the NSW Police Force as having taken place in a taxi or at a taxi rank.

The purpose of providing these statistics is to make taxi drivers aware of incidents reported in taxis or at a taxi rank which may impact on drivers.

The NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) provides NSW Transport and Infrastructure with quarterly updates of reported crime incidents that NSW Transport and Infrastructure uses to monitor and inform the Taxi Industry.

Safety issues to watch

The following graph shows the incidents reported to the NSW Police Force as having taken place in a taxi or at a taxi rank over the October to December 2008 holiday period. Taxi drivers should be aware of such incidents and the type of prevention strategies can be put in place to mitigate against them, especially during such periods.

Reporting taxi crime

If you are a victim of a crime, other than one which is life threatening or a time critical emergency situation, you should contact the NSW Police Force Assistance Line (PAL). Taxi drivers can report the following crimes to PAL without initially attending a police station and interrupting your shift:

  • Fare evasion
  • Motor vehicle theft
  • Malicious damage
  • Other non-life-threatening or time critical emergency situation

If the crime you wish to report cannot be taken over the phone, due to its serious nature, the operator will assist you by advising the location of the nearest Police Station where you can report the incident, or by arranging for the Police to come and see you.

The phone number for contacting PAL is 131 444.

You can access more information on PAL at the When do I call PAL? 131 444 page on the NSW Police Force website.

You can report fare evasion using this form - 1.47 Mb PDF. You will need to either email of fax the form to the Police following completion. The Police contact details are contained on the form.
