Taxi and Hire Car Safety
Taxi and hire car safety and regulation is undertaken by the Ministry's Transport Operations Division. This division works with the taxi industry and other key stakeholders to ensure quality taxi service provision in New South Wales, and to drive reforms and ensure compliance with standards.
In achieving this task, regular liaison occurs with both government and industry organisations to develop standards and strategies to resolve safety issues and to ensure standards are met in line with the Passenger Transport Act 1990.
Within the Ministry there has been a consolidation of the compliance and policy functions, resulting in:
- recommended amendments to the Passenger Transport Act 1990 to require the taxi industry to meet higher service standards
- increased taxi inspections by 300% to enforce customer service and safety standards
- continued to progress driver safety strategies.
Another major task being undertaken is the ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness of surveillance cameras in taxis.
- Eligibility criteria for financial assistance to install security cameras in taxis
- Guidelines for the use of security cameras in New South Wales taxis - 510 kb PDF
- Security camera systems for taxis - 51 kb PDF. (Extract from the New South Wales Government Gazette No. 113; 20 July 2001.)
