Eligibility Criteria for Financial Assistance to Install Security Cameras in Taxis

Clause 114 of the Passenger Transport Regulation 2007 requires that all taxis in New South Wales must have installed cameras by 1 September 2008.

The NSW Government will contribute up to $2000 per taxi to accredited taxi operators who can meet the eligibility criteria to assist in the purchase and installation of these cameras.

To be eligible for the contribution, the camera must have been purchased and installed after 1 September 2007 and your application must be lodged with the Ministry of Transport by 1 December 2008.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for the assistance all of the criteria for the particular type of taxi must be met.

Standard taxi

  • The taxi must be licensed to operate in a licensing district where there are 3 or less licensed taxis at the time of the application.
  • The gross annual earnings of the taxi over the past financial year must not exceed $60,000.
  • A supporting statement from a qualified accountant verifying the earnings of the taxi.

The Ministry will only provide assistance for cameras that meet the current specifications issued by the Ministry of Transport under the Passenger Transport Act 1990.

Application process

  • If an operator seeks an assistance payment for more than one taxi then the criteria must be met for each taxi.
  • An application will only be considered if it is submitted on the application form (Word file).
  • The application must be accompanied by a tax invoice for the purchase and installation price of the camera system.
  • The Ministry of Transport reserves the right to make whatever inquiries considered appropriate in assessing the applicant's eligibility for the assistance. Where the Ministry seeks comment from a third party on any financial information provided by you, the Ministry will request that the third party maintains the confidentiality of that information.
  • The Ministry of Transport will make a payment to the applicant (if approved) within 21 days of receipt of the application.
