Journey to Work (JTW)

Use Employment counts for specific locations e.g. commercial centre analysis, daytime population, profile of resident workforce for a specific area, industry trends and method of travel to work. Also provides input to employment and travel forecasts
Method Complete enumeration via a self completion Census form
Scope Employed persons aged 15 years and over, who were employed during the week before Census night and
2006 - with workplace in NSW
2001 - with workplace in NSW
1996 - counted in the GMA
1991 and 1981 -resident in the GMA
Data Management For each year there is a set of predefined tables with a particular combination of variables, which cannot be linked across tables
Output Counts of employed persons and travel to work
Geographic Coverage Greater Metropolitan Area (GMA) up to 1996 (all of NSW from 2001)
Geographic Level Statistical Local Area, Travel Zone and aggregations of these
Reference Period Persons counted in the Census on Census night and were employed during the week prior to the Census
Frequency 5 yearly
Historical Zone level data is also available for 1991 and 1981
Variables Employment: industry, occupation, mode of travel to work, hours
Person: age, sex, income
Household: household/family type, dwelling structure, number of household vehicles
Data Quality/ Definitional Issues TDC JTW data may produce slightly different counts to those obtained directly from ABS for the same geographic level due to:
  • ABS confidentialising process (randomisation of small cells)
  • Further validation and adjustment of the data by TDC
  • Imputed of unknown destination counts across zones within an SLA to eliminate locality 'dump' codes
Mode = mode(s) used to travel to work on Census day
Origin = place where the person spent Census night
Destination = employer's address
