Small Area Population and Employment Forecasts

Population and employment forecasts at travel zone level are estimated using forecasting models that are managed by the Transport Data Centre. These forecasts are small area estimates which are normally used as inputs in other modelling processes such as the Sydney Strategic Travel Model. The population forecasts should be differentiated from the official Population Projections produced at a broader geographical level by the Department of Planning.

Forecasts are available for each travel zone in the Greater Metropolitan Area for 2006, 2011, 2016, 2021, 2026 and 2031. The population forecasts include estimates of population (by age and sex) and dwellings. The employment forecasts are classified by 1-digit industry.

The current TDC forecasts are largely in line with the size and distribution of growth in the Metropolitan Strategy. They are currently being revised to incorporate 2006 Census data and the latest thinking on population projections, particularly different fertility and migration rates. Revised forecasts will be available by mid-2009.
