Transport Management Centre

The Transport Management Centre (TMC) monitors and manages the NSW State road network 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

During morning and afternoon peak travel times, major events and unplanned incidents, the TMC also monitors and coordinates Sydney’s public transport operations across trains, buses ferries and light rail.

The TMC’s role

The TMC works to deliver consistent travel times for both road and transport customers, on a daily basis. To do this, specially trained staff use the most advanced systems to monitor traffic and transport flows in real-time, and respond to incidents as quickly as possible.

Many events are held in Sydney and across NSW each year that require road closures, and changed driving and transport conditions. The TMC works closely with event organisers and venue operators to develop and implement appropriate traffic and transport management plans to minimise the impacts both on people taking part in the event and the non-event community.

The TMC uses a range of channels to keep customers up-to-date with traffic and transport conditions that may affect their journeys, including radio crosses and interviews, advertising, social media, mobile apps, Variable Message Signs, the 24-hour 132 701 Traffic Information Line, and the Live traffic and Transport info websites.

Road users can also report traffic incidents or road hazards 24 hours a day by calling the Incident Reporting Line on 131 700. Every year about 200,000 people call this dedicated line to report road incidents.

A coordinated approach

Senior representatives from NSW Police and train, bus and ferry operators are based in the operations room at the TMC to enable the most coordinated approach to transport monitoring and communication.

During incidents and major events, staff at the TMC work closely with other government agencies, service providers and emergency services to deliver a coordinated approach, including:

  • Department of Premier and Cabinet
  • Roads and Maritime Services
  • NSW Police
  • NSW Fire & Rescue
  • NSW Rural Fire Service
  • Ambulance Service of NSW
  • NSW State Emergency Service
  • Sydney Trains, Sydney Buses, Sydney Ferries
  • Local councils

A dedicated NSW Police Motorcycle Response Team is also based at the TMC and targets congestion in Sydney’s CBD during peak travel times.
