Greener Wilder West

Current research shows that connecting to nature and spending less time in front of screens can have positive effects on your physical and mental health.

Greener Wilder West programs ran in Western Sydney Parklands between August 2022 and February 2023 as part of The Festival of Place.

These programs were created by Greater Sydney Parklands’ education and community programs team in collaboration with Blacktown Arts, Shared Knowledge, Wild Food Store, Hooked on Nature, and Casula Powerhouse

Greener Wilder West was launched as part of the National Science Week community event Science in the Scrub 2022. All program providers presented their workshops at this event that attracted community members to western Sydney. A Bush Craft Village, Aboriginal Weaving Circle, Foraging and Bug hunting stalls gave the audience a taste of what they could experience through the program.

Over 9,000 participants took a break to reconnect to nature in one of the multi-sensory walks, workshops or activities as the parkland came alive with participatory science, art, and nature experiences for all ages.

The Festival of Place’s support enabled this pilot program, and following the communities’ positive feedback, the program was extended until the end of June 2023.
