50-Year Vision for Greater Sydney's Open Space and Parklands
50-Year Vision for Greater Sydney Parklands
The final 50-Year Vision for Greater Sydney's Open Space and Parklands imagines the future of Greater Sydney’s numerous and diverse outdoor spaces and parklands.
The then NSW Minister for Planning and Public Spaces announced the final 50-Year Vision for Greater Sydney's Open Space and Parklands on 24 May 2021 after consultation with the community.
Greater Sydney’s abundance of parklands is a legacy of good decision making over many years and we are building on that legacy, creating a city in a park.
The Greater Sydney Parklands Trust Act 2022 was passed on 29 March 2022 and established the new Greater Sydney Parklands Trust. The Trust is responsible for protecting our existing parklands, while also establishing new parklands to realise the 50-Year vision for Greater Sydney to become a ‘city within a park’.
Timeline
The community conversation about open space and parklands across Greater Sydney has evolved over the following stages:
Phase 1: July 2020
Release of the Draft 50-Year vision for Greater Sydney's Open Space and Parklands
Parklands are critical to the health, wellbeing and liveability of our communities, providing areas for recreation, visual amenity and access to nature, as well as supporting green jobs and local economies. They are vital for the conservation of our natural environment and habitat for wildlife in the city.
The COVID-19 pandemic reminded us of the need to access and enjoy public space near home more than ever. It’s the right time to consider our aspirations for public spaces and parklands for the years to come.
Our 50-Year Vision for Greater Sydney's Open Space and Parklands imagines greener streets, higher quality parklands and more green connections that support healthy people and communities.

Greater Sydney Parklands Shadow Modelling Study
The Greater Sydney Parklands Trust Bill 2021 introduces a new requirement for any new development to consider the impacts of it potentially overshadowing the parklands.
It aims to protect our most significant urban open spaces so they will continue to be places to enjoy, places that provide green infrastructure for urban cooling and relief, homes to remnant ecological communities and places that provide facilities and spaces for recreation.
