Batemans Bay Bridge lift span back to normal operation from tomorrow

Transport for NSW advises road users and boaters the twice daily lifting of the Batemans Bay Bridge will resume from tomorrow, subject to testing tonight.
Executive Director NSW Maritime Mark Hutchings said for the past eight days taller boats have been unable to pass beneath the bridge, as continuous road access along the Princes Highway and on to the bridge was required for the movement of supplies and emergency vehicles responding to nearby bushfires.
“Although repairs are still being carried out to fire damage on the Kings Highway, the risk of fire on the Princes Highway has diminished,” Mr Hutchings said.
“This is great news for operators of Clyde River ferry tours and the skippers of other privately owned vessels, which are too tall to fit beneath the spans of the bridge.
“Safety always comes first. However, we thank all those who have been impacted in the past eight days for their patience.”Director Southern Region Sam Knight said the bridge lift span will be tested tonight, Wednesday 11 December, between 7pm and 9pm.
“There will be 10 minute delays with 15 minutes between each span test,” Ms Knight said.
“The bridge lift span will be operational for the 11.45am and 2.20pm daily lifts from tomorrow, subject to satisfactory testing.”
The decision to reopen the bridge lift span was made in conjunction with emergency services, maritime and stakeholders as the risk from fire reduces.
If further risks are identified the community will be informed of any changes to the lift span operations on the bridge.
Back burning activities to reduce further bushfire risks near the Kings Highway are continuing. Work is currently being carried out to clear unsafe trees and debris from the road. Pending favorable conditions over the next few days, Transport for NSW hopes to reopen the Kings Highway in the coming week.

Motorists should continue to exercise caution, and follow the directions of emergency services and traffic crews. Transport for NSW has reaffirmed road freight access remains open from the south to Batemans Bay, ensuring essential supplies can reach the area, despite the ongoing bushfires.
