The Great Western Highway upgrade between Katoomba and Lithgow has entered a new phase of progress, with Aurecon (eastern section) and Jacobs Arcadis Joint Venture (western section) appointed to refine the design and prepare environmental assessments for those respective sections.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said the upgrade would improve congestion and provide safer, more efficient and more reliable journeys for all roads users travelling in and through the Blue Mountains.

“We know how important this project is and fast tracking these tenders brings the construction of the upgrade a step closer,” Mr Toole said.

“This was a very competitive tender process, with 12 applications from companies qualified to carry out this specialised work on what will be a game-changing project for the Blue Mountains and the Central West, as well as a major support to the post- COVID regional economy.”

Mr Toole said the eastern section of the upgrade extends from Katoomba to Blackheath - excluding Medlow Bath which is being progressed first - and the west package extends from Little Hartley to Lithgow.

The central section is still undergoing options analysis.

“Community feedback has been critical to shaping the designs for the upgrade and further consultation and investigations to help develop concept designs will continue in the New Year,” Mr Toole said.
