The Horsley Drive upgrade submissions report now online
30 May 2019
Planning is progressing for improvements to a key corridor through south west Sydney, with the submissions reports for the proposed The Horsley Drive Road upgrade now available.
A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said the community was asked to provide feedback in mid 2017on the proposed upgrade between the M7 Motorway and Cowpasture Road.
“The Horsley Drive is one of the busiest road corridors through south west Sydney so it is important to ensure all road users are better connected across the region,” the spokesperson said.
“The section between the M7 Motorway and Cowpasture Road provides a strategic freight link to and from the motorway and into the Smithfield/Wetherill Park industrial area which is why this upgrade is needed.
“The proposed upgrade would deliver more lanes to provide better connections to the Western Sydney Employment Area and the Wetherill Park/Smithfield industrial area as well as improve safety, freight access and efficiency for thousands of road users.”
The spokesperson said the proposed upgrade would involve upgrading the road to four lanes between the M7 Motorway and Cowpasture Road, with a wide central median to allow for six lanes in the future.
“Work would also include upgrading the intersection with Ferrers Road and Cowpasture Road north as well as replacing the existing roundabout at the intersection of The Horsley Drive and Cowpasture Road with traffic lights,” the spokesperson said.
“A pedestrian and cyclist shared path along The Horsley Drive would also be built, connecting with the Western Sydney Parklands cycleway.”
The spokesperson said Roads and Maritime Services received 33 submissions about the proposed upgrade from the community and government agencies.
“The main comments received related to traffic and access, socio-economic impacts, noise, non-Aboriginal heritage issues and utilities,” the spokesperson said.
“After considering all feedback provided, Roads and Maritime is progressing the proposed The Horsley Drive upgrade without changes.”
The spokesperson said further planning for the proposed upgrade will progress to finalise the detailed design.
“The community and stakeholders are thanked for taking the time to provide feedback and will be kept updated as plans progress.”
