Reduced speed limit at two Forbes Shire level crossings

Motorists have been warned to slow down at two rail level crossings in the Forbes Shire, with reduced speed limits set to come into effect from Monday 25 July.

A Transport for NSW spokesperson said the reduced speed limits were being introduced as part of a NSW Government campaign to improve safety at level crossings across regional NSW through the Railway Level Crossing (RLX) Speed Reduction Program.

From Monday, the speed limit on both sides of the level rail crossing on Garema Pinnacle Road, Garema will be reduced from 100 km/h to 80 km/h.

The speed limit on both sides of the level rail crossing on Wirrinya Road/Back Marsden Road, Wirrinya will also be reduced from 100 km/h to 80 km/h.

Both new speed zones will apply 400 metres before the crossing for approaching traffic.

“Crash statistics show that from 2008 to 2021 there were 83 collisions between trains and cars at level crossings in NSW and, sadly, 10 people lost their lives,” the spokesperson said.

“We’re doing all we can to prevent those crashes in future to make level crossings safer for all road and rail users.”

The spokesperson said reduced speed limits at Garema and Wirrinya had been recommended by Transport for NSW following a period of consultation and had been supported by the NSW Level Crossing Strategy Council.

The changes will add about five seconds to the trip for motorists travelling at the speed limit.

“That five seconds is time well spent to help avoid a devastating crash. New signage has been installed on the approaches to both level crossings to advise motorists of the changes and all drivers are advised to slow down in the area.”
