Safety improvements for motorists on Appin Road

Motorists are advised of changed traffic conditions for Appin Road this month as work starts on safety improvements at Cataract.

A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said the NSW Government allocated $885,000 for the work, which is taking place between 2.1 km and 3.6 km east of Illawarra Street at Appin.

“The improvement work will include widening the centre line and existing road shoulders to increase the separation of traffic and reduce the risk of head-on crashes,” the spokesperson said.

“Guardrail will also be installed for 320 metres to protect motorists from roadside hazards.”

Night work will take place from 7pm to 5am on Sunday 11 November with no night work on Monday 12 November.

The first stage of work will restart on Tuesday 13 November from 7am to 5pm and continue for three weeks, weather permitting.

From 4 December, night work will be carried out for two weeks, weather permitting. This work will take place from 7pm to 4am.

For the safety of workers and motorists, changed traffic conditions will be in place for the duration of the project with a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h during work hours and 80 km/h outside work hours.

One eastbound lane will be closed during the first stage of the work, with one lane remaining open in each direction.

Alternate lane closures will be in place during stage two.

Motorists should plan their journey and allow up to an additional five minutes in travel times.
