Planning is progressing for improvements to roads across the Greater Macarthur Growth Area, with submissions reports for the proposed Appin Road upgrade and Appin Road safety improvements projects now available.

A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said the community was asked to provide feedback on these important proposals in late 2018.

“The Australian and NSW governments are preparing for the future of Western Sydney by ensuring future road users are better connected with their homes as well as key employment and recreation areas across the region,” the spokesperson said.

“Appin Road is a busy state road which caters to thousands of vehicles each day, including many trucks carrying freight between Wollongong and Sydney’s south-western suburbs.

“The proposed work would improve safety and increase road capacity for the thousands of new residents expected to live in the area.”

The spokesperson said the proposed upgrade between Rosemeadow and Mt Gilead would see around four kilometres of Appin Road duplicated, two new signalised intersections built to provide access to the Mt Gilead development and three existing intersections upgraded to improve safety and connectivity.

“This proposed upgrade is being funded by the NSW Government’s Housing Acceleration Fund, as part of the Restart NSW program, and Lendlease,” the spokesperson said.

“The Housing Acceleration Fund grants allow early investment in infrastructure projects which are a blockage to housing delivery or would normally only be considered for funding in the longer term.”

The spokesperson said the proposed safety improvements between Mt Gilead and Appin would include the installation of new sections of roadside safety barriers, curve alignment and the creation of a new overtaking opportunity for northbound traffic to improve traffic flow.

Work would also be carried out to install new right turn bays with U-turn facilities to improve safety for residents entering and exiting driveways.

The spokesperson said Roads and Maritime Services received 132 submissions in total, including 84 for the proposed Appin Road upgrade and 48 for the proposed Appin Road safety improvements.

“The main comments received related to koala safety, habitat and connectivity, access from the road and expected traffic, as well as comments around heritage and utilities in the area,” the spokesperson said.

“After considering all feedback provided, and the design requirements for each project, Roads and Maritime is progressing the proposed Appin Road upgrade and Appin Road safety improvements.

“In response to comments around protecting fauna in the area, Roads and Maritime will install additional fauna fencing at Noorumba Reserve as part of the proposed Appin Road upgrade.”

The spokesperson said planning for both proposals will now progress to finalise detailed design and any further environmental considerations.

“The community and stakeholders are thanked for taking the time to provide feedback and will be kept updated as the projects progress,” the spokesperson said.
