Telescope, Peak Hill next to benefit from Newell works

The NSW Government’s plan to improve safety, freight productivity and travel times on the Newell Highway has reached a major milestone with construction on the tenth of 30 new overtaking lanes starting next week.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said the tenth project would kick off at Telescope near Parkes on Monday with an eleventh project starting at Peak Hill in January.

“We are powering ahead with our commitment to deliver about 30 lanes in four years, with the number of new lanes to be built now likely to surpass the initial goal,” Mr Toole said.

“This is great news for everyone who travels along the Newell Highway as we create more opportunities to overtake slower vehicles, which will improve safety and efficiency along this key corridor."

“Once completed, freight operators and motorists could benefit from around 25 minutes in travel time savings along the length of the Newell.”

Mr Toole said the two new overtaking lanes will be supported by successful local suppliers and businesses with contracts being awarded prior to Christmas to help build the road.

“Transport for NSW is working with the Newell Highway Program Alliance to maximise the opportunities on the project for local contractors and suppliers, with more than 100 locals and regional businesses having already benefitted from the program,” Mr Toole said.

“In advance of work starting on each new overtaking lane, there are local industry briefings and community information sessions to ensure the best local participation and understanding of the program of work."

“We want these infrastructure projects to drive economic activity in the bush as well as safer and more productive journeys on our roads.”
