Thirroul safety improvements community consultation

Road surface improvements on Lawrence Hargrave Drive in Thirroul will be carried out from next week in conjunction with community consultation on further safety upgrades.

Transport for NSW will carry out resheeting work between Lachlan Street and Hewitts Avenue from Monday 5 June, weather permitting.

Asphalt patching will then follow from Bulli Pass to Phillip Street, and temporary pavement markers will be installed along the current lanes to guide traffic on the road.

"We have responded to community concerns about the condition of the road and are carrying out the road service improvements as a priority to ensure a safe and smooth ride for road users through Thirroul,” a Transport for NSW spokesperson said.

“We are committed to ensuring safety across our network and have proposed additional minor safety upgrades that will provide more efficient journeys for all road users, including public transport users, by easing congestion and improving traffic flow along this busy state road.”

The spokesperson said community members were encouraged to look at the designs and improvements proposed for the area which are now available online.

No further work will take place on this stretch of road until consultation on the proposed road safety improvements is completed and the feedback is considered by the project team.

“Proposed improvements include the relocation of two parking spots from the southbound side of Lawrence Hargrave Drive to the northbound side, resulting in an increase of parking spaces,” the spokesperson said.

“Safety improvements also include the installation of right turn bays on Lawrence Hargrave Drive into High Street and Wrexham Road, which would formalise existing arrangements while reducing the risk of rear-end and side-swiping crashes.

“We’re also proposing to relocate the southbound bus stop near High Street about 50 metres north to a position closer to the traffic signals, which will make it safer for people to cross the road. The location of a concrete barrier separating the road from the footpath just north of the proposed bus stop also serves to increase safety for public transport users.

“Transport for NSW has worked in collaboration with Wollongong City Council and local bus operators to ensure the new location is a suitable site and provides people who rely on public transport with safe and equitable access to bus services.

“We believe these minor changes with safety benefits will benefit the broader community and are in line with feedback received during consultation in 2021 when community members were supportive of intersection improvements being investigated.”

Consultation on the proposed safety improvements is open until 5pm on Wednesday 14 June.

Information on the safety improvements and a digital online tool where community members can leave their feedback is available at yoursay.transport.nsw.gov.au/thirroul-safety-improvements.
