Work to start on Double Bay Wharf upgrade

A more accessible and modern Double Bay Wharf is a step closer to realisation with work to upgrade the facility starting on Tuesday, 13 June.

A Transport for NSW spokesperson said the upgrade is being carried out as part of the NSW Government’s Transport Access Program, which is an initiative to deliver safe, modern and accessible public transport infrastructure across the state.

“Work will be done during the cooler months to minimise impacts on the local sailing club and other water users and is expected to take six months to complete,” a Transport for NSW spokesperson said.

“The upgrade includes a new pontoon and gangway to provide an accessible route to a waiting ferry, customer seating and weather protection.

“Following important feedback from the community we’ve added additional features to the new pontoon to allow berthing by recreational and smaller vessels, we will also retain, shorten and remediate the existing jetty to reduce disturbance of the seabed.

“Extra seating will also be added to the pontoon’s covered waiting area.

“Due to tidal steps at the current wharf, passengers with mobility needs have been unable to use the ferry unassisted, so this is a vital upgrade to ensure the wharf is accessible for all and meets modern requirements.

“Double Bay Wharf is an iconic part of our beautiful Sydney Harbour and to have it improved will be a great asset for locals and visitors to enjoy.”

Besix Watpac has been awarded the contract to upgrade the wharf. Once construction starts, the wharf will be temporarily closed for up to six months and will reopen in summer.

Ferry passengers can plan ahead and use alternative transport during the wharf closure, including nearby bus services, trains from Edgecliff Station and the Darling Point and Rose Bay wharves.

Public transport options for people travelling to and from the city include:

•    324, 324X and 325 bus services on New South Head Road.
•    323, 326, 327 bus services on New South Head Road. Change at Edgecliff station for trains to the city.
•    328 bus service on William Street. Change at Edgecliff station for trains to the city. This service runs limited hours on weekdays only.

Passengers are advised to allow extra time and always plan their travel by checking transportnsw.info for the latest updates.
