Look out - Transport's safety-first culture is in safe hands

Safety. It’s at the very heart of our responsibility to our customers as a transport provider.
Every day, we are responsible for the safety of millions of people, whether it’s on our trains, roads, ferries, buses. Initiatives such as Rail Safety Week, Road Rules Awareness Week and Bus Safety Week are just some of the ways we remind customers and our staff to always put safety first.

Safety is also a fundamental commitment to our employees.

Transport for NSW is committed to instilling a culture focused on safety in the workplace. ‘Looking out for each other’ is a new internal safety initiative aimed at changing our culture to one where everyone puts safety first, every time.

The innovative learning program guides and inspires all transport staff to look out for their colleagues, the community and our customers.

Our new approach to safety is taking learning out of the classroom and moving it back into our work environments – our depots, stations and lunch rooms.

Driven from the top down, this people-focused initiative features inventive digital, virtual and social resources that are tailored to everyday work environments so that staff can immediately apply the learning to their own situation.

Stacey Edmonds, TfNSW’s Director of Design and Delivery with Group Organisational Development, says ‘Looking out for each other’ is a shift from a compliance-led to a safety-led culture, and reflects Transport’s ‘Safety’ core value.

“Across the Transport cluster, we want to make safety a part of everything we do. We want the heart of our culture to be about looking out for each other, one where we stand and take action together,” Stacey said.

This safety initiative has already received independent recognition, with a related campaign short film titled ‘Safety Means’ winning gold and silver awards at the 2017 International Business Awards.

Known as the ‘Stevie Awards’ and lauded as the world's premier business awards, Transport competed against more than 3900 nominations from more than 60 nations to secure the two awards.

The awards were created in 2002 to honour and generate public recognition of the achievements and positive contributions of organisations and working professionals worldwide.

Our safety focus, led through the ‘Looking out for each other’ initiative is just one way Transport is putting our staff at the heart of everything we do, and supports our journey towards becoming an employer of choice.
