Transport for NSW has fulfilled its commitment to have all 5,000 Contract Buses in the State’s fleet of public and private buses fitted with engine bay fire suppression technology.

The two year project kicked off in August 2015 to have all buses operating in the Sydney Metropolitan and Outer Metropolitan routes fitted by August 2017.

State Transit completed work on their fleet ahead of schedule in December 2016, while the private bus fleet was completed earlier last week, also ahead of schedule.

“The safety of our customers and staff is our number one priority and now every Contract bus fitted with engine bay fire suppression equipment,” said a Transport for NSW spokesperson.

“Over the last two years we have retrofitted 2,335 private operator buses and 1,300 State Transit buses. All new additions to the bus fleet since 2015 are fitted with engine bay fire suppression systems.”

Bus fire suppression technology restricts the spread of fire to provide more time for passengers to reach safety.

The technology works by releasing a high water pressure mist or powder if excessive heat is detected in the engine bay of a bus.
