Heavy vehicle registration changes

There have been some changes to heavy vehicle registration in NSW.

These include:

  • a new national heavy vehicle plate and a nationally consistent plate fee of $29.20
  • heavy vehicle registration labels will no longer be required
  • fleet operators with two or more vehicles will be eligible for a common expiry date.

Transport for NSW (TfNSW) will continue to manage and administer vehicle registration services in NSW, such as new registrations, renewals and changes to registration details.

As of 1 October 2018, operators will have read only access to national fleet registration details on the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) on-line Portal.

National heavy vehicle plates and nationally consistent plate fee

A national heavy vehicle plate will be issued in NSW whenever:

  • a new heavy vehicle is registered
  • an unregistered heavy vehicle is re-registered
  • an interstate(without the national heavy vehicle plates) vehicle transfers into NSW
  • a lost, damaged, destroyed or stolen number plate is replaced.

This does not include:

  • heavy tow trucks
  • public passenger buses
  • NSW Conditional Registration Scheme customers.

NSW customers who have heavy vehicle personalised or custom 'myplates' registration plates displayed on their heavy vehicle will not be required to have national heavy vehicle plates.

Myplates will still be available for NSW customers with new registrations if they wish to have a personalised or customer number plate in place of the national plate.

Standard myplates fees will apply for all new myplates customers.

The new national plate looks like the example below with black lettering on a white background and a blue 'NATIONAL HEAVY VEHICLE' sash across the bottom.

Removal of registration labels

Registration labels for Heavy Vehicles (over 4.5 tonne) have been abolished.

Federal Interstate Registration Scheme (FIRS) vehicles must continue to display a rego label until expiry or 30 June 2019.

Labels will continue to be required for vehicles with an Unregistered Vehicle Permit.

Common registration expiry dates

Customers with two or more vehicles in their fleet will now be eligible for the Common Expiry Date (CED) Scheme.

This means that all of your vehicle registrations will expire on a single date.

See the CED Scheme page for information on how to apply.

Registration details accessible on NHVR Portal

From 1 October 2018, heavy vehicle operators will be able to access details of their registered assets on the free, online NHVR Portal.

For more information visit the NHVR.

Are you a Federal Interstate Registration scheme (FIRS) customer?

The Federal Interstate Registration Scheme (FIRS) has been closed to renewals and new registrations with the scheme being completely removed on 1 July 2019.

FIRS operators are no longer able to establish or re-register under FIRS.

Existing FIRS customers will receive separate information from Transport for NSW to assist them with their transition.
