Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance

About CTP insurance

CTP insurance provides cover for death and personal injury when you, or the person driving your vehicle, is at fault in an accident.

In some circumstances, CTP insurance covers you regardless of who was at fault.

For detailed information about the CTP insurance scheme, visit the State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA) website.

For vehicles registered in NSW, the CTP insurance must be issued by a NSW CTP insurer.

Registration renewal and CTP insurance

You cannot renew your NSW registration until Transport for NSW (TfNSW) has confirmation of the CTP insurance.

Most insurers send your CTP insurance details to TfNSW electronically. If you’ve paid for your CTP insurance through a Post Office, broker or agency, there may be significant delays in the electronic submission process.

The period of cover of your CTP insurance policy must match your registration term. For example, a six-month registration requires a six-month CTP insurance policy.

Use-by date

CTP insurance policies have a use-by date.

You must use the CTP insurance policy to register your vehicle by the use-by date specified. If you don’t, it will become invalid and you’ll need to buy a new CTP insurance policy.

CTP insurance for six-month registration terms of light vehicles (up to 4.5 tonned Gross Vehicle Mass) have a use-by date of 21 days after the registration expiry date.

If you don’t renew the registration within 21 days, you cannot renew with a six-month term. Instead, you can only renew the registration for 12 months, and you need to buy a new 12-month CTP insurance policy.

Contact your CTP insurer if you have any questions about the use-by date of your policy.

New registrations and CTP insurance

If you need to get a new NSW registration, for example because the previous registration was cancelled, or you’re bringing a vehicle into NSW from another state, you’ll also need CTP insurance. The period of cover must match the registration term requested.

Most CTP insurers send your CTP insurance details to TfNSW electronically.
