Controlled access buses

Buses and coaches, other than articulated buses, that are longer than 12.5 metres and up to 14.5 metres long can travel on approved routes specified in the National Class 3 Controlled Access Bus Exemption Notice 2019.

What is a controlled access bus?

A controlled access bus (CAB) is a bus, other than an articulated bus, that is longer than 12.5 metres long but not more than 14.5 metres long.

These buses are more difficult to manoeuvre than standard length buses and therefore are not suitable to drive on all roads.

Where can a controlled access bus travel?

In accordance with the National Class 3 Controlled Access Bus Exemption Notice 2019, a controlled access bus must only travel on approved routes (PDF, 1.69 MB).

Approved routes

The CAB network map displays approved routes and denied routes for CABs operating under the National Class 3 Controlled Access Bus Exemption Notice 2019.

As the map does not currently show all approved and denied routes, operators must also refer to the list of Controlled Access Bus Approved Routes (PDF, 1.69 MB) and Controlled Access Bus Denied Routes (PDF, 135.56 KB).

Using the NSW CAB Network map

The NSW CAB Network map offer pan/zoom, different map views, location search and access to local street images.

Routes approved for different vehicle types are enabled by selecting the vehicle type using the radio buttons in the legend menu on the left-hand side.

Additional travel information may be available for selection from the legend menu on some of the interactive maps. Information about a particular route e.g. Travel Restrictions, is accessed by clicking on the route, which will launch an information box which provides detailed information.

By using the zoom and drag features included you are able to view and print maps at a level of detail and covering the area you need.

The search function allows you to centre the map on a geographic location based on an address, town, postcode or a set of coordinates.

Double decker buses

Double decker buses operating under the New South Wales and Victoria Class 3 Bus Mass Limit Exemption (Notice) 2014 (No.1) Amendment Notice (No.1) 2016 are permitted to operate at higher masses on approved Double Decker Bus Routes.

What is a double decker bus?

A double decker bus is a bus that has two decks, other than an articulated bus, that is not longer than 12.5 metres long.

Double decker bus routes

In accordance with the New South Wales and Victoria Class 3 Bus Mass Limit Exemption (Notice) 2014 (No.1) Amendment Notice (No.1) 2016 a double decker bus can travel on the following list of approved controlled access bus routes:

For travel on routes that are not approved, operators must obtain an access permit from the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator.
