Traffic Route Lighting Subsidy

Applying for a subsidy for providing a higher level of lighting on major routes? Here's how.

The provision and maintenance of street lighting is generally a responsibility of Local Government.

Transport for NSW (TfNSW) has responsibility for:

  • the lighting of freeways
  • large bridges
  • some tunnels
  • isolated and mainly rural intersections.

The Traffic Route Lighting Subsidy Scheme (TRLSS) is a scheme administered by TfNSW whereby Councils may apply for a subsidy for providing a higher level of lighting than might normally be provided on certain major routes, with the aim of decreasing road crashes at night.

The amount of the subsidy depends on the number of certain types of inventory installed as detailed by each Council.

Two procedures are available to explain how to apply for the subsidy.
