Artist Statement

As our daily lives become faster, the act of travelling becomes an embodiment of transition from one place to another - less to do with the experience of 'in-between' places and more to do with getting to the destination. To rouse lived sensations of rail travel and to commemorate the recent 185th anniversary of the opening of Australia's first railway, we want to rekindle the historic wonders of travelling as whimsical, strange, compelling adventures through an enchanted world in-between time and place to a not-so-familiar yet not-so-different Wynyard Station.

The past moves with the present which moves with the future. As the future must be left open, we want to narrate an imaginative history, to tell new tales from past travels. One that speculates what ifs, rather than what is, has been or will be.

Artist Biography

Nancy Liang and Baron Chau are Sydney-based artists who operate together on a range of multidisciplinary art, media and design projects that often explore speculative, fictional worlds in-between the real and the imagined. Baron is interested in critical futures through design, while Nancy yearns for the past and nostalgia through illustration. Their shared practice in animation creates a moving dialogue that traverses time through an estranged past, a precarious present and towards desirable futures.
