Project overview
The Australian and NSW Governments are funding projects along Appin Road (between Gilead and Appin) to improve safety and support affordable housing in the Greater Macarthur Growth Area. In addition, there are works funded and delivered by Lendlease as part of a Voluntary Planning Agreement (VPA) between Rosemeadow and Gilead.

January 2024 - Appin Road upgrade Addendum Review of Environmental Factors Submissions Report and determination
The NSW Government has given approval for Lendlease to fund and deliver the Appin Road upgrade (Mount Gilead to Ambarvale) project which includes road safety improvements and important biodiversity measures to cater for housing growth while protecting local koala and wildlife populations.
A submissions report (PDF, 6.17 MB) has been prepared which responds to the feedback received and includes additional design changes. A community update (PDF, 1 MB) has been published announcing the project determination.
Project information
Background
Appin Road is a key arterial road connecting south-west Sydney and the Illawarra. This busy state road caters to thousands of vehicles each day, including many trucks carrying freight between Wollongong and Sydney’s south-western suburbs.
This road extends across three Local Government Areas including Campbelltown City Council, Wollondilly Shire Council and Wollongong City Council. Appin Road is predominantly one lane in each direction, with some two-lane sections providing overtaking opportunities.
Transport for NSW plans to provide improvements on Appin Road with the following three proposed projects:
- Appin Road Upgrade – VPA between Rosemeadow and Gilead
- Appin Road Safety Improvements – in Gilead
- Brian Road Intersection Upgrade – in Appin

Transport has also completed a study to identify a suitable route option for a link road between Appin Road, Gilead and Menangle Road, Menangle Park. The link road would support future housing growth and provide a key connection between Appin Road and Spring Farm Parkway Stage 1 and the Hume Motorway at Menangle Park.
