Batemans Bay Independent Coastal Impact Study

Reviewed

Project overview

In September 2018, Transport for NSW asked GHD to carry out an independent assessment into the coastal impacts on the Clyde River to be completed in two stages.

Aug 2019 - Impact assessment report

Stage One of the report looked at what impact the Batemans Bay Bridge replacement project would have on the riverbed and shoreline as well as to waves, flooding, tides and currents in the Clyde River compared to the existing bridge.

View or download the Stage One of the Batemans Bay Independent Coastal Impact Assessment (PDF, 27Mb) and the Stage One Consultation Report (PDF, 2.02Mb) that considers feedback received during the development of the Stage One report.

Stage Two of the study proposes to assess into the broader issues of erosion in Batemans Bay. We are currently asking for feedback on the proposed method and scope for Stage Two (PDF, 180Kb) of the study.

More information is available in the June 2019 community update (PDF, 330Kb).

The proposed method and scope for Stage Two of the study was on display for community feedback in July 2019. The team is reviewing and considering all feedback and will prepare a consultation report explaining how feedback has helped to shape the next stages of the study.

Project information

Background

Stage One of the report has been completed and looked at what impact the Batemans Bay Bridge replacement project would have on the riverbed and shoreline as well as to waves, flooding, tides and currents in the Clyde River compared to the existing bridge.

Stage Two of the assessment would look into the broader issues of erosion in Clyde River, not relating to the new bridge. It would identify options for sustainable infrastructure solutions along the northern shoreline of Batemans Bay to protect the residents from coastal erosion.

The proposed method and scope for Stage Two (PDF, 208Kb) of the study is now on display for community feedback until Wednesday 31 July 2019.

Outcomes of the Stage One report

  • The new bridge will have less impact on erosion, wave, tides and currents in the Clyde River compared to the existing bridge. This is due to the reduced number of piers and the abutments being further away from the river.
  • The new bridge will not create additional impacts to the shoreline compared to the existing bridge.
  • The new bridge will not adversely influence the distribution of waves inside the Bay.
  • The new bridge will not influence sea level rise.

New modelling confirmed findings of earlier assessments including the project’s environmental assessment in 2017 and further assessments carried out by John Holland and Jacobs in 2018.

How will GHD carry out Stage Two?

  • GHD would review information available for the development of engineering solution options, including all feedback and submissions received by the community and experts during the Stage One consultation.
  • Modelling would be undertaken to inform the options development and preliminary designs completed.
  • Criteria would be set up to assess options for the foreshore protection including location, purpose, design life, maintenance needs, site constraints, other land uses, aesthetics and requirements for an environmentally friendly design.
  • Options would be assessed based on this criteria and a preferred option would be determined and shared with the community for feedback.
