Project information

Background

The NSW Government funded this project as part of its $225 million Pinch Point Program which aims to reduce traffic delays, manage congestion and improve travel times on Sydney’s major roads, particularly during weekday peak periods.

Motorists traveling through Liverpool often experienced congestion and long wait times squeezing through the busy, central intersection at the Hume Highway and Bigge Street. The Hume Highway would have queues of motorists waiting to return home which then block other road users continuing south along the Highway or transferring to the M5 Motorway.

Roads and Maritime upgraded this ‘pinch pint’ by:

  • widening the western side of Bigge Street to provide an additional northbound lane to
  • creating two dedicated right turn lanes into the Hume Highway for eastbound vehicles
  • creating a dedicated left turn lane onto the Hume Highway for westbound vehicles
  • providing a dedicated left turn lane and shoulder on the southern side of the Hume Highway into Bigge Street for southbound vehicles.
  • installing a 'No Stopping' zone in the existing clearway on the southern side of the Hume Highway between Goulburn Street and Bigge Street to improve traffic flow
  • extending the existing 'No Stopping' zone on the western side of Bigge Street about 30 metres south from its current position to improve traffic flow.

Benefits

Benefits to the community include:

  • improved traffic flow along the Hume Highway corridor
  • increased efficiency and safety of the Bigge Street and Hume Highway intersection
  • reduced risk of crashes, particularly rear end crashes
  • reduced queuing and waiting times for vehicles turning from Bigge Street onto the Hume Highway eastbound and westbound.

Community consultations

Roads and Maritime Services invited the community and stakeholders to provide feedback on this proposal in May and September 2015.

We received comments from four people in May and in September we received comments from Liverpool City Council and one person. A community consultation report (PDF, 2.12Mb) and community update (PDF, 501Kb) announcing the outcomes of consultation were published in January 2016.

In June 2016, Roads and Maritime Services invited the community and stakeholders to provide feedback on this night work schedule.
