Reviewed

Project overview

Safety improvement work at Blackadder on the old Pacific Highway, 35km north of Coffs Harbour, was completed in June 2012.

Latest news

Jul 2019 - Safety work to commence

Work is underway to lower the road level of Solitary Islands Way (old Pacific Highway), near Blackadder Creek.

The work involves lowering a 270-metre section of road to match the road levels prior to the original safety work completed in 2012. The project will involve rebuilding the road surface to transition into the lowered section, installing new drainage and removing the centre median wire rope barrier. We will also be removing old sections of road pavement on the western side of Solitary Islands Way. The total length of the project will be 440 metres.

Transport for NSW committed to completing these works in response to community concerns and detailed investigation.

Work is expected to be completed in December 2019, weather permitting.

More information is available in the June 2019 project notification (PDF, 113Kb).

Project information

Background

The safety and traffic improvements at this location were part of the NSW Government's commitment to upgrade the Pacific Highway under the $170 million, five-year Road Toll Response Package.

Transport for NSW improved the radius of the curve and installed a central wire rope barrier to the north of Blackadder Creek Bridge to improve safety for motorists.

The project included raising the levels of the highway to reduce traffic disruptions caused by localised flooding.

Project objectives

  • Improve horizontal alignment by replacing existing with one 500m radius curve
  • Installation of central wire rope to separate opposing traffic
  • Increase flood immunity to maintain highway traffic up to a 1-in-10 year event.
