Brian Road Intersection Upgrade

Reviewed

Project overview

The NSW government is proposing an upgrade to the Appin Road and Brian Road intersection in Appin as well as a koala underpass to improve koala connectivity.

Project information

Background

Appin Road is a key arterial road which connects road users travelling between south-western Sydney and the Illawarra. Locally the road services the suburbs of Appin, Gilead and Rosemeadow.

Transport proposes to construct a roundabout at the Appin Road and Brian Road intersection as well as install safety barriers along Appin Road. The proposal also includes a speed reduction which would extend the current 50km/h speed limit north to include the roundabout.

Regarding koalas, a koala underpass is proposed at the intersection to connect koalas near Ousedale Creek travelling between the Georges River Reserve and Nepean Corridors.

The koala underpass implements one of the key recommendations of the Cumberland Plain Conservation Plan and addresses a key issue identified in the Campbelltown Comprehensive Koala Plan of Management.

Features and Benefits

The proposed upgrades include:

  • A new single lane roundabout at the intersection of Appin Road and Brian Road to enable southbound traffic on Appin Road to turn north. The proposed safety median barriers in the Appin Road Safety Improvements project will restrict this movement.
  • A koala underpass under Appin Road, with refuge poles at the koala underpass entrances and an elevated timber log through the underpass to aid koala movement
  • A new vegetated path to the new koala underpass
  • Speed reduction and new barriers to improve safety
  • Koala fencing along both roads and koala grids across driveways to mitigate koala, and other wildlife, vehicle strikes
  • Koala fence drop-downs at either side of the underpass to allow trapped fauna inside the road corridor to escape
  • Utility relocations, drainage, pavement markings, street lighting and signage
