Slope stabilisation work between Wattle Road and Buckleys Road on the Snowy Mountains Highway at Brown Mountain is now complete.

Project information

Background

Mountain passes are some of the more challenging parts of the road network to maintain. They are regularly inspected for stability and these assessments guide requirements for maintenance. Heavy rains in early autumn resulted in landslips on the aged granite slopes of Brown Mountain, resulting in natural material including huge boulders to fall onto the travel lanes.

A $2.2 million slope stabilisation project at this location started in mid-April to remove selected boulders, trees and unstable natural material. The area will also receive treatments that include installing soil nails into the slopes which are then tightened against the slope with steel mesh and erosion matting for support, to prevent further slips and erosion. Important road maintenance will also be completed.

The Snowy Mountains Highway at Brown Mountain will be closed in both directions between 7pm and 7am, Sunday to Thursday for 8 weeks from 19 April, weather permitting.

Work will also be carried out during the day between 7am and 7pm, Monday to Friday under single lane closures and a reduced speed limit of 40km/h to.

Detours will be in place for both light and heavy vehicles via the Princes Highway or Imlay Road and the Monaro Highway and is expected to add up to 1.5 hours to journeys.

No Over Size Over Mass vehicle’s will be able to travel through Brown Mountain unless prior notice is made with the project team. To make arrangements to travel during this time contact, Project Manager Phil Oste 0429 504 652.

Benefits

The project will deliver:

  • Improved safety for transport customers, through the prevention of further erosion on the slopes which could lead to large boulders falling onto the road during future weather events.
  • Better and more reliable trips for people, business and freight particularly for those travelling on the Snowy Mountains Highway between Cooma and the South Coast
